Sony Ericsson has recently implemented a refreshed strategy towards the enterprise customer. This strategy involves engaging with all enterprise customers, from large corporate organisations to “Small and Medium Enterprises” (SME), as well as “Small Office-Home Office” (SOHO) workers.
Sony Ericsson approaches these enterprise customers in many different ways, depending on what type of company they are. For SME and SOHO customers, a large proportion of handsets are purchased through traditional retail channels but we also target the SME customers through dedicated indirect Business to Business (B2B) channels. For large corporate customers, we engage with these customers directly, in order to conduct trial activity of new products or to present the enterprise capability of the full Sony Ericsson portfolio. This enables the corporate buyer to make an informed decision when choosing which solution to implement.
The enterprise market is a growing segment of the overall market - In Western Europe, it is estimated that approximately 20% of handsets sold are used within the enterprise area. In Western Europe during 2007, approximately, 32.4m handsets out of a total market of 148.6m (21.8%) were sold to enterprise customers. It is expected that this segment will grow to approximately 39.8m handsets in 2011.
Sony Ericsson has identified five enterprise propositions to explain the enterprise capability of the portfolio. These propositions are Business Voice, Messaging, Personal Productivity, Mobile Internet and Mobile Broadband. There is a wide and varied selection of material available to explain these propositions and they have been widely accepted by the carrier community that we deal with. These five propositions enable both operators and customers to choose from the wide portfolio offered by Sony Ericsson, in order to select a handset that meets their needs, both professionally and personally. Sony Ericsson are not trying to force a dedicated enterprise range on the market, rather we are trying to promote and highlight the relevant enterprise features that already exist in a large number of handsets in the portfolio.
The overall philosophy is to promote solutions that are relevant to the enterprise customer, rather than specific handsets. This enables Sony Ericsson to show the benefits of products from the Accessory and Mobile Broadband portfolio alongside the handset portfolio.
Sony Ericsson works very closely with their solution partners to provide a rounded enterprise offering. These partners (like Microsoft™, DataViz™, Seven™, Visto™) are from many different areas, including mobile email where we actively promote BlackBerry Connect and Exchange ActiveSync on our Open OS platform. This is also the case with XPERIA™ X1. Sony Ericsson also promote the use of Exchange ActiveSync on the majority of handsets going into enterprise channels, with the exception of the most basic devices within the portfolio. Sony Ericsson also partner with navigation/location based services vendors, such as Wayfinder and Webraska. For security solutions, there are partnerships with Certicom, Perlego, and Trend Micro amongst others.
Many of the solutions from partners are available through the 'Fun & Downloads' area of our website. These solutions can enhance the user experience for the business customer. We are constantly enhancing our enterprise solution, offering more applications and partnering with more relevant businesses to further enable our products in the enterprise area.
The goal of Sony Ericsson is to be recognised as one of the top 3 providers of enterprise solutions in Western Europe by 2011.

I [SE] expanding my horizons
Helping him work, wherever the job takes him
Daniel Sinclair is the owner and Principal Consultant of Axxiant Ltd., a business development and software architecture company.
Axxiant's consultants have designed and implemented a broad range of technology-based solutions since the inception of the commercial Internet in 1995. These have helped companies improve profitability, competitiveness and customer service. As the companies Daniel works with are based all over the world, his job involves a great deal of international travel. Because of this, he was the perfect choice to put the new Xperia™ X1 to the test.
The office at his fingertips
As a frequent traveller, Daniel found himself in Los Angeles for the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference. During down time, he used his X1 to speak to clients, colleagues and friends via Skype. The fast Internet connection, plus the Exchange Active Sync, meant he could keep in touch via email too. Plus, he could access the web quickly using Wi-Fi and view the pages horizontally on a full screen.
Describing the X1 as the 'ultimate mobile office solution', Daniel made full use of the Windows Mobile® 6.1 software. He said it was perfect for downloading PDFs, plus accessing, editing and sending detailed spreadsheets and Word documents meaning he could work without compromising on quality.
Making easy work of it
What made the X1 really stand out for Daniel was its ease of use - "syncing the handset with my office computer was a dream!" He could even customise the nine-panel interface to focus on the applications he used most. He changed one of these panels to the weather in Los Angeles so that he could check the weather and pack the correct clothing.
Daniel found the X1's arc slide out, QWERTY keypad in landscape mode, made typing emails much easier; he described the keypad, with slightly raised keys as one of the best he'd ever used on a mobile device. He particularly liked the self-correcting text entry and predictive address book - this made working much easier and faster.
Vastly superior performance and security
Being in the software architecture business, it's no surprise that Daniel is familiar with numerous operating systems. When he used Windows Mobile on his old handset, he complained it was not very user friendly. He was pleasantly surprised with how Windows Mobile® 6.1 worked on the X1 - it completely transformed the way he used his mobile for work. He also added "Windows Mobile® ActiveSync works brilliantly and is superior to every other ActiveSync client I've ever used."
Daniel also loved the way the X1 backed up his emails, files and address book whilst his emails synced. He found this particularly useful as he often finds he has around 500 contacts in his address book at one time. There's also an encryption facility for extra, everyday security so Daniel could relax knowing that all his contacts and data were totally secure.
Helping him find his way
The X1's aGPS capability meant Daniel never needed to worry about getting lost or being unprepared. Using preinstalled Google Maps™ he was able to find his way around every country he visited whilst accessing real-time traffic reports and receiving driving directions. All of this helped ensure he was never late for a meeting.
The X1 helped with friends and family too as Daniel could meet up with them when on foot by taking directions while walking.
The X1 helps his free time too
Daniel has also tested the X1s capabilities at home. In his spare time, he used his handset to control his Windows Media Centre on his home PC. He is able to select music to be played around every corner of the house and gets full album covers on his phone as well.
Daniel's experience with the X1 handset has made him realise he couldn't work without a handset like this again. He was able to keep in touch with clients while on the move and access files at his home office through ActiveSync and using pre-installed office applications to make any changes.
Daniel couldn't wish for more in a handset, it has helped him every step of the way in business and spiced up his free time by keeping him in tune with his music.
